As the current captain of Real Madrid and the Spanish National Football team, Ramos has built a legacy as a versatile centre-back who shows the impenetrable defence and the ability to put the ball in the net.

Where It All Started

Sergio Ramos Garcia was born in Camas, Seville, Andalusia, Spain in the spring of 1986. Ramos began playing football at an early age. By the age of 6, he had already joined his local football club Camas C.F. After a short time on the youth team, Ramos had moved to the much bigger Sevilla. After eight years of hard work on the club's junior teams, Ramos made his first-team appearance in 2004 off the bench. The following season, Ramos would contribute heavily to the Sevilla side in La Liga. With Ramos' contributions, Sevilla qualified for the UEFA Cup by finishing sixth in the league.


The Beginning of a Legacy – Ramos and Real Madrid

After only a full season with his childhood club, Ramos was purchased by fellow La Liga club, Real Madrid in the summer of 2005. Ramos immediately made an impact on the defence of Real. In his first season with the club, he became the mainstay on the pitch in both the right-back and centre-back positions. Ramos even started to become offensively minded as he contributed six goals from the back.


Ramos continued to contribute both offensively and defensively for Real Madrid. Five goals and an unstoppable showing on defence during the 2006-07 season contributed to Ramos’ first La Liga title while at Real. The following season told a similar story as Ramos put in another five goals and secured his second La Liga title with his club.


At the beginning of the 2009 season, Ramos was named captain of Real Madrid. Due o injury on the team, Ramos was moved to the central defender. He saw his 200th club appearance during the end of the season. In the following two seasons, Ramos faced a fair bit of controversy as he set the club record for the number of red cards obtained. He continued to act as a dominant force on the side's defence, but the team finished in mediocre placements.

In 2011, Ramos and Real dominated La Liga and brought home their third league championship during Ramos’ tenure. 2012 to 2013 saw continued success for Ramos and the team. Ramos was held from play for several games due to his large quantity of red cards that he had acquired throughout the season. By the end of 2013, Ramos was consistently the acting captain for Real Madrid.

The 2013-14 season was an excellent one for Ramos. The defender scored 7 goals on the season, his highest with the club. Three of these goals came in consecutive matches. Real would go on to win their first Champions League during Ramos' time with the club. 2014 started great for Ramos and Real with the win of the UEFA Supercup. The team would go on to dominate world football that year by winning the FIFA World Club Cup. Ramos was named man of the match for the final and received the FIFA Golden Ball for the tournament.


In 2015, Ramos was named the official captain of the club. Real Madrid had a solid season and progressed handily through the UEFA Champions League. Ramos scored an impressive goal in the final against cross-town rival Atletico Madrid to secure his second champions league victory with the club and his first as captain. Ramos was named man of the match for the final game. Due to injuries sustained throughout the season, the defender only secured three goals in the entire season.


In the following season, Ramos led his club to a UEFA Supercup victory. In February of 2017, Ramos logged his 500th appearance for the club. Later on, in the season, Ramos and Real Madrid would go on to win the 4th League title during Ramos' time with the club. Ramos also led his team in dominating European football with the second consecutive Champions League victory. Ramos scored ten goals in the 2016-17 season, making it his highest-scoring year to date.


Ramos continued to add to his legacy as a successful captain with the third Champions League victory in 2018. Ramos is the only captain to lead a team to three consecutive Champions League victories. In his last few seasons with the club, Ramos has continued to lead his side to success. In 2020, Ramos in Real Madrid on the 5th La Liga title while Ramos has been on the roster. Ramos still holds the position as captain of Real Madrid and continues to add to his 15-year legacy to see with the club. The Spanish National Football Team

Sergio Ramos made his international football debut in 2005 during the qualifying rounds for the 2006 World Cup. Ramos didn’t make his biggest contributions until Euro 2008. During the tournament, the defender played almost every minute. He scored multiple times throughout the competition and helped bring his team to victory.


Ramos' breakout year for the Spanish National team came in 2010. During the World Cup tournament, Ramos played every single game at the right-back position. Through his efforts, Spain kept 5 clean sheets leading up to the world cup final. They defeated the Netherlands 1-0 to lift the trophy and bring the World Cup back home to Spain.


Ramos and the Spanish team saw more success during Euro 2012 where they cruised through the competition and lifted the trophy.


In 2014, Ramos played in the group stages, but the Spanish side was eliminated quickly. In the 2018 World Cup, Ramos was named captain of his team. The Spanish team was a part of the infamous “group of death” during the group stages but managed to come out on top. However, Spain would go on to lose the first game out of the group stages in a shootout against Russia. Ramos continues to play on the Spanish National team to this day and currently holds the record for the country's most capped player in international play. Ramos also holds the record as the eighth-highest scorer for the side.


The Trophy Cabinet

Ramos has established a winning legacy with both club and country. As the captain of both teams, Ramos has led several teams in lifting silverware throughout his career. During his time at Real Madrid, Ramos has won La Liga five times and counting with his last win as recent as 2020. He has lifted two Copa del Rey trophies with his team and has won the Supercopa de Espana four times. Ramos and Real have won the Champions League four times and the Super Cup three times. Ramos and his club have also taken home four FIFA Club World Cups back to Madrid.


As captain of the Spanish National Football Team, Ramos has led his country to the highest honour on earth in 2010 with a World Cup victory. He has also contributed to the Spanish national team winning two UEFA European championships in 2008 and 2012.


Individually, Ramos has filled his own personal trophy cabinet. He has been named to the UEFA Team of the Year eight times. He has been named La Liga's best defender eight different times. In 2014, he was awarded the Golden Ball in the FIFA World Club Cup and was named the competition's top scorer. In 2020, Ramos was named to the Ballon d’Or Dream team on the Bronze level.

The legendary Spanish striker Raul shared the pitch with Ramos for the beginning of his career at Real Madrid and on the Spanish national team. Raul played a big role in both teams' success as an unstoppable goal scorer.


Iker Casillas

The Spanish goalkeeper played on both Real Madrid and The Spain national team with Ramos. On both teams, Casillas preceded Ramos as captain. Casillas and Ramos were jointly responsible for the five clean sheets that brought Spain their World Cup in 2010.


Luka Modric

The Croatian midfielder and Ballon d’Or winner has been a teammate of Ramos at Real Madrid since 2012.


Karim Benzema

The French striker has contributed 177 goals to Real Madrid since joining the club in 2009. Ramos and Benzema have connected on several goals and have lifted several trophies together.


Marcelo

The Brazilian left-back has been apart of Real Madrid since 2007. Marcelo and Ramos have played together on the defence throughout many of the club’s most resounding victories.


Toni Kroos

The German midfielder is another Real Madrid legend. Ramos and Kroos have connected on plenty of passes in the seven years the two have shared the pitch.


Where Is He Now?

At only 34 years old, Sergio Ramos continues to play for Real Madrid. Ramos is still the acting captain for his side and continues to contribute to his club on the pitch. Ramos is also the acting captain of the Spain National Football team and plays in international competitions to this day.
