Sergio Aguero's Early Years
Sergio Leonel Aguero Del Castillo was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in the summer of 1988. From an early age, Aguero took on the nickname Kun, which he even wears on his shirt to this day. The nickname was handed down to the footballer by his grandparents who believed that he looked like a cartoon character of the same name. Aguero began playing football at an early age and joined his first youth team, Independiente, at the age of nine.
Aguero continued to play for the junior team at Independiente from the age of nine until he was 15. In 2003, Kun Aguero was called up to the senior team at Independiente, making him the youngest player to play in Argentina's top league since Diego Maradona in the late '70s. Aguero would later grow up to marry the eldest daughter of the legendary Maradona.
Aguero made a few appearances throughout the season but did not get his first start for the club until 2004. He continued to contribute to the club in small ways and became a fixture on the first team. Aguero truly began to shine during the 2005-06 season. Aguero scored 18 goals in 36 league appearances and began to attract the attention of bigger clubs.
European Club Football
In the spring of 2006, Aguero left Independiente after spending nine years with the club. His transfer to Atletico Madrid had set a record for the highest fee and expectations for the young Argentine striker was high. Aguero had a mediocre start to his European football career, only scoring seven goals in his first season.
In 2007, Aguero took a more important role on the team and at the age of 19 became La Liga’s third-highest scorer. Aguero put in 19 goals in 37 appearances in the league with some key strikes that helped Atletico qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in a decade. Aguero continued to contribute to the success of his club through fantastic goal scoring.
In the 2009-10 season, Aguero traded his individual goals for a more team-based approach that brought much success to his club. Aguero and Atletico finished the season with a victory in the final of the UEFA Europa League over Fulham. This Atletico side would go on to win the UEFA Super Cup as Aguero took on the role of vice-captain.
The 2010-11 season continued to showcase Aguero’s ability in front of the goal. It was during this season that Aguero scored his first hat-trick and his 100th goal in the same match. In the spring of 2011, Aguero announced that he was leaving the club to move to the Premier League, much to the dismay of fans.
A Legacy at Manchester City
Aguero got off to a slow start at Manchester City. Over the first few months at the club, Aguero barely made the squad and was often kept from the bench because he was not quite fit enough to play. Aguero's EPL debut came in a league game against Swansea City in the summer of 2011. In 30 minutes of play off the bench, Aguero tapped in his first goal for the club and even earned his first assist. The start was one of the best to ever be recorded in English Football. Aguero continued to rack up goals throughout his first season as both a starter and substitute. By the end of the season, Aguero had scored 30 goals in 48 appearances. In the final game of the season, Aguero sent the final goal in that won Manchester City their first Premier League title since the late sixties.
In the following season, Aguero sustained a knee injury in the first game which limited his goal scoring for the year. In the 2013-14 season, Aguero once again started the year with a knee injury. However, it did not keep the striker from contributing heavily to his side's goal-scoring. During this season, Aguero surpassed Arsenal Legend Thierry Henry with the highest ratio of goals per minutes played. Aguero scored 28 goals in 34 appearances and lifted his second Premier League title with Manchester City.
Aguero would continue to lay his legacy down at City in the following three seasons. Minor injuries kept Kun on and off the pitch but did not affect the striker's overall goal-scoring ability. From the start of the 2014-15 season to the end of the 2016-17 season, Aguero scored 94 goals in a total of 131 appearances for the club.
Early in the 2017-18 season, Aguero set the record for goals scored in the Premier League from a non-European footballer. During this season, Aguero set the record for top goalscorer at Manchester City and surpassed his 350th career goal. At the end of the season, he helped his team lift his third Premier League title and an EFL Cup.
The 2018-19 season saw Aguero’s 300th appearance for his club. Later on, he would go on to score his 150th goal in the Premier League. He also set the record for league goals scored with the club and tied the Premier League record of hat tricks with 11. Aguero and Man City went on to lift their fourth Premier League title that season.
In the past two seasons with the club, Aguero has continued to put in goal after goal for his side. In 2019-20, even with the covid-based closure of the league, Aguero managed to put in 23 goals. In the current season, Aguero still poses a threat in front of goal and continues to add to his legacy at Manchester City.
Aguero made his first-team appearance for the Argentina national Football team in 2006 at the age of 18. He was later chosen as a member of the squad for the 2010 World Cup. His goal helped qualify his side for the tournament. Aguero made an impact for his team throughout the tournament scoring and assisting in key goals. However, the Argentines lost to Germany in the quarter-finals despite Aguero's best efforts.
Aguero was again part of the Argentina side for the 2014 World Cup. His team reached the final, but once again lost to Germany. Aguero's first-ever World Cup goal did not come until 2018 when he scored against Iceland in the group stages. His only other World Cup goal came later in the tournament during a match against France that saw Argentina eliminated from the tournament.
Aguero's Trophy Cabinet
Throughout his long career as a goal scorer, Sergio Aguero has earned many trophies and shattered both club and league records. A Europa League and Super Cup victory in 2010 was only the beginning of the striker’s honours. Aguero has helped Manchester City return to greatness in the Premier League winning four league titles while with the club. Man City have also hoisted an FA Cup, 3 FA Community Shields, and EFL Cups during Aguero’s tenure. As a member of the junior teams for Argentina, Aguero won two U-20 World Cups and an Olympic Gold medal.
